Yet Another Linux Distro Debate
It's not really a debate but I will debate here. Recently Linux Torvalds and Linus Gabriel Sebastian (from LTT) have a great collab where Linus fake built a PC for Linus real. Don't criticize me yet, that's what he said in the video XD.
You should watch the whole video but what interested me the most is the fact that Linus Torvalds chose Fedora for a long time. He tried Debian based but Ubuntu is kind of Windows..
He said that it prevents him from replacing the kernels easily.
Well that he has a point right? Regular user shouldn't care but more technical users like him for example, should be easily rebuild and replace the kernels so Fedora allows it.
But why not go all the way to Arch Linux??? I am currently using Arch Linux for my homelab and I have tried to use Arch Linux + KDE Plasma for my main PC. Which turned out to be not that good. Well it's fast, extremely fast to be honest, and it's the god of customizations, I can do whatever I want with it. Which is great. Until it isn't 😦 The problem with being tooooo customizable is what? Right "too customizable" you don't read that wrong. I have a really really hard time finding all the drivers for my hardwares. I have a Deepcool AIO cooler, I have Nvidia graphics card, those two alone is a pain in the a**. Ass. Not to mention a lot more like you literally have to mix your own 2.1 sound setup, sounds crazy yet?
If I have to list out all the problems you will have to read for too long so I'll conclude here:
It doesn't worth it, Arch Linux is good for server, homelab and Raspberry PI but not on your main PC
It's so much hassle and you have to grind your way in and out and every directions possible. God damn it. I still really really love Arch, but that reduce my productivity a lot. why? Well I have to work on my PC! And using Arch I have to spend my precious time grinding through it. not enjoying it like when it's in my homelab anymore. You get the idea?? homelab is for hobby, PC is for work and make money.
So what's the sweet spot? FFEEEEDDDDOOOOOORRRRRAAAAAA!!!!!!
I'm sorry for that😂 but I think that really is. And because Linux Torvalds have been comfortably using it for a long long time while being highly productive and still be able to customize alot. That has to be it. Fedora it is. let's just pick 1 and stop considering all other distros.
Don't get me wrong, I am not trying to start up a distro war here but just go watch the video. I haven't even use the Fedora yet but I suspect I will still have to grind throught the internet to find drivers 🪛 (Bro don't think icons are from AI's writing okay?? I just find it funny) So now I'm still sticking with Wind*** even though it's really screaming "fuck off". Microsoft really know how to treat their customers right?
